Eggheads going on and on

I’ve taken a rather inadvertent blogging break. My still-in-physical-therapy ankle is an ongoing life factor. Other things have been happening too with the results being that I’ve not had much time for blogging.

But all the while I’ve been not-blogging I’ve been working a little along towards my upcoming one person exhibit at Caplan Art Designs which opens the first Thursday in October.

My exhibit is about words. It’s titled “Figures Of Speech 2.0”. Words are slippery buttery things that slide down easy but if you’re not careful over time they can clog your thinking. So I’ve been creating 2d and 3d artworks in which I visually examine the meanings of words.

For example: I’ve been thinking about how the word “Egghead” is often used to tease or even intimidate smart people. Yet I think of how essential smart, creative, educated people are to having a functioning society of any kind. Smart people are the staples of civilization kindof like eggs are a staple in a working kitchen – whether that “kitchen” is a hot-plate in a dorm room or a 5-star professional restaurant. There are many foods that simply aren’t possible without an egg. Many things that make life smooth in a community – whether a small rural town or a big metropolitan city – simply aren’t possible without people sharing their skills with whatever it is that they’re smart in.

One person doesn’t have to know everything or be smart about everything in the world, they just need to be smart within their own capacity – they just need to be a good egg. A functional society has a lot of good eggs.

This is why I’m working on my sculpture “Eggheads” using the format of a kitchen staple.

As I work on my Eggheads I’m thinking of humorous clothing and appearances and trying to paint that, using acrylic, on the surfaces of some very solid real-wood eggs and egg cups.

The finished Eggheads will be interchangeable with the egg cup bodies.

The Eggheads are still in progress … more to come!

Besides the Eggheads I’ve been working on some doodlebugs… a sculpture and a book… a sub-exhibit within my exhibit. I’ve shared something about the doodlebugs on my email newsletter. I’ll share more about that project here too soon. I hope. At least I intend to try…

I hope you’re doing well and that you’re content.

  1. Your eggheads are fun! I always enjoy the way you turn puns and idioms into wonderful visuals. I am glad you are managing to find the balance between physical healing and your creativity, both important acts of self-care.

    1. Thank you so much!! It’s been a challenge. As you know I’m an old hand at doing creative work in short bursts amid life’s busyness – but having such a serious ankle injury has added an extra level of difficulty to this game. I’m grateful for my prior experience at balancing art and life or I’d really have issues just now.
      Thank you again!! ❤❤❤
