A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

Imaginary birds flew in my last post and I knew physical therapy was on my near horizon. So I did my best to think of P/T as an opportunity (see my email newsletter) and I remembered the phrase “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. That phrase inspired the weeks work on this painting….

… which I finished and titled “A Bird In The Hand Is Worth Two In The Bush”.

“A Bird In The Hand Is Worth Two In The Bush ” – by Clancy – 8 x 10 in – gouache and ink on board

Now I’ve actually begun physical therapy for my hurt ankle. My therapists taught me how to walk on crutches more efficiently and have given me instructions about resting – complete with increments of time outlined. They’ve also explained that I’ve not been elevating my foot properly, they demonstrated doing it correctly and also sent me home with a visual aid.

At home I’m doing my best to abide both by the foot elevation altitude requirements and the resting time allotments. Since the time spent each day with my foot scraping the sky seems epic I’m making it more fun by taking this time as an opportunity to read some nice thick juicy tomes.

And since St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend it’s also an opportunity to reread some stories in one of my favorite anthologies…

In short bursts between ankle therapy sessions I’ve begun a new painting…

I wish you the luck of the Irish and may the nicest of birds nest sweetly in your hand.

  1. I am sorry that your recovery continues to plod along. I am sure you are frustrated by your physical limitations. I am glad at least that you are able to use your rest time for one of your favourite activities.

    1. Thank you. Yes, I get very frustrated at times. And, yes, I’m very grateful to be a reader and to already have a large To Be Read pile to indulge in!! The doctors and therapists tell me to settle in because this recovery is going to take a while. Sigh.

  2. I’m loving your recent focus on birds since they are perhaps my favorite type of creatures. So sorry for the topsy-turvy inconvenience of elevating your foot. I do envy your extra time just for reading, however. I hope you can continue to enjoy that aspect. Sometimes it’s hard to keep enthusiasm for tasks when they are almost the only choice! Your efforts to keep motivated are admirable, Sue. I hope you finish mending and getting back to activity as quickly as humanly possible. ❤

    1. Thank you!! I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the birds I’m doing – it’s fun to be creating them! Yes, this ankle recovery journey feels like a full time sh*t job sometimes. I’m doing my best to make it more pleasant by thinking “I get to read!” and that works…mostly. You’re correct when you say it’s hard to keep enthusiasm for things that are “the only choice” – fortunately I have a tall To Be Read pile!
