A letter and some thoughts

I’ve been writing on my Substack – A.M. Sketching – each week and sharing my sketchbook pages and thoughts as I work on another fine art series.

This week I shared a letter I wrote to our great nephew – in which I talk about adulting well and the use of mundane things we enjoy as a way to help get through difficulties within the sea of life.

I also talked about mental condoms.

The relevant point from my letter for my blog here is that I’m thinking of the essentialness of the mundane. I’m celebrating mundane things, with a twist of course, in my new fine art series.

I’ve read Ursula Le Guin’s “Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction” and I loved her discussion of how humans originally survived because of mundane things – because of the people who collected bags of oats and cooked them – rather than the lone hero with weapons of domination who made a lucky kill once in a while.  (Link here to Le Guin’s book https://www.ursulakleguin.com/the-carrier-bag-theory-of-fiction )

I’ve been reading other books along similar lines – I’ve a bibliography, as is my usual for an art series – but Le Guin’s is uppermost.

So here is one of my paintings from my new series titled “So Sushi Me”, it’s 4 feet tall by 1 foot wide, acrylic on canvas.

Just imagine if cats could carry fish in a to-go box…

I hope you’ll go see my letter (here) it’s foundational for my new series which I’ll share here on my blog a little along.

I’m primarily writing on my Substack because I still need to limit the amount of typing I do because of my thumb-collapse and thumb arthritis issues. But I have pretty thumb braces now! Yay! You can see them in this photo my wife took of me at work on a new piece within my new series.

I hope you’re doing as well as can be. Thanks for being here!

Thank you for reading and sharing encouragements!
