Eggheads forum

As I’ve worked on my Eggheads sculpture – hand painting heads on 12 solid wood eggs and bodies on 12 solid wood egg cups – I thought about how smart people are as essential to society as eggs are to a working kitchen. In the background of my thinking was a question of how to display my finished 24 piece sculpture.

My one-person exhibit at the Caplan Art Designs Gallery opens Oct 3 and the reception goes from 6 to 8 pm. So especially for the opening party my Eggheads need to be contained and yet presented somehow on a pedestal.

I considered egg cartons, boxes and baskets of one kind or another. But nothing satisfactorily solved my question about how to display the 24 pieces in an attractive yet accessible way that also reflects my idea behind the Eggheads.

Then a friend told us, during one of our visits over dinner, about going to an upcoming professional conference for her work. Her conversation reminded me of forums and panels whereby people sit side by side on a stage and take turns talking about related topics.

That conversation gave me an idea. So later, after our visit, I began looking for a rack of some sort that would hold my Eggheads side by side and I found one!!! It’s a solid wood stacking rack that displays 6 on one side and 6 on the other!! Here’s a look at the new rack on my work table.

Here’s a more formal look at both sides of my Eggheads forum…. it makes me laugh to see them!! I think this rack will work nicely for display in the Gallery!

Here’s a closer look so you can see how they sit nicely in the rack.

Here’s a look at some individual Eggheads on a bookshelf. I hope they’ll decorate people’s shelves with a little whimsy!

Here’s a video of me playing with the Eggheads as I hope people will play with them at my exhibit opening!

Yes, I thought about how people meander during breaks in a conference and will sometimes even change their clothes between sessions. 🤣

I’m grateful for conversations with my friends; so much of my artwork is inspired by them and creative problems are solved too but most of all these conversations are just fun and I try to honor that fun within my work.

I wish for you some pleasant conversations with your friends too!

  2. They’ve turned out wonderfully! The rack is a terrific idea and the proportions of it displays them perfectly. Having the space between heads and bodies gives me immediate understanding that they mix and match. It looks custom made for them.
I agree heartily with Liz. I think they’ll be a big hit!

  3. I really think the eggheads are delightful. I love the way you have chosen to display them as it does emphasize the egginess of them while also encouraging the mixing and matching.
