Within my Figures Of Speech 2.0 fine art exhibit which opens Oct 3 and continues throughout October at the Caplan Art Designs Gallery I have a sub-exhibit that I’ve titled “Doodlebugs”. It contains a sculpture, several framed paintings and a printed book.
With my sculpture I refer, visually, to science museum displays because the scientific study of various species and how their varieties enrich our world is similar to ways I view the many kinds of drawing – all art is necessary to a mentally healthy cultural environment just as all bug species are essential to our ecosystem.
The framed paintings are some of the pieces in the book mentioned below. They’re grouped together with the sculpture in the exhibit.
My printed doodlebug book is a humorous collection of various, ahem, species of doodlebugs. It’s a nod to the little books you’d find in the science museum gift shop.
Here’s a look at my sculpture.

Here’s a video look…

Here’s a video look-through of the printed book.

I hope you’ll have some fun doodle bugging.

The sculptures give the doodlebugs such gravitas. I actually believe they’re real.

Lol!!!! Thank you!! I pulled on my past experiences of working as a zoological biological illustrator- 3d illustrations (dioramas) for museums were part of my job. So it was great fun to create an imaginary doodlebug species 🤣

The book is reminiscent of a scientist’s field guide when seen in combination with the bell dome containing the doodlebug specimen. It is fun to think about the possibility of encountering doodlebugs in the wild.

I’m glad you liked what I created!! It was fun for me too to imagine being a field scientist observing and documenting the elusive doodlebugs. For so many years we only saw stray doodle marks on grocery lists and other papers… so catching a doodlebug in the act was a challenge!! 😉🤣
