Ducks in a row

This painting that I began in my last post was inspired by one of my nephews who teased me, gently, about saying so often during our family domino games that I “need a minute to get my ducks in a row”. Apparantly I tend to focus on our family conversations during our games rather than on my dominos and which I’m going to play next – which amuses our nephew.

So this last week I worked on…

…and worked on….

…until I finished my gouache painting and titled it “Ducks In A Row”

“Ducks In A Row” by Clancy – 8 x 18 inches – gouache and ink on board

I combined my nephews teasing with my memories of the several years my wife and I, along with 6 to 8 of our friends, had season tickets to Portland Center Stage. We’d meet in the lobby and hope to sit in a row together. Sometimes that worked. Sometimes we had seats near each other. During intermission we’d meet again in the lobby to talk. After the play was over we’d meet again in the lobby and go from there to a local restaurant.

So that’s why I set my “Ducks In A Row” in a theater setting. Fun times!

This painting joins the rest of the series for exhibitions via the Caplan Art Designs Gallery later this year.

And I began a new painting right away.

This new one is another 18 x 24 inch piece. I’ve gotten a new stool with wheels on it and since this piece is so big I’m going to go slow (yes, I am!) and be mindful of my still-in-physical-therapy ankle (firm note to self: be ankle aware!)… Wish me luck…

I hope you’ll have fun at any family domino games or any other activities you do this week. And remember to take care of your ankles!

  1. I love the Ducks in a Row painting for the way that each character has a distinct personality. Thank you for sharing the personal stories that inspired this piece. I was a regular theatre goer at one stage in my life so your painting stirred up lots of nostalgia for me.

    1. Thank you so much for seeing the character personalities!!! I really appreciate it that you “see” what I’m doing!! Were you a theatre goer here in the states or in Scotland?

    2. I have not experienced much theatre here in the US simply because it becomes an expensive experience for a family of six. I was a regular theatre goer before parenthood when I lived in or on the outskirts of cities. I lived just outside London for several years so made very good use of all of the theatres there, including taking my students on trips.

    3. I can easily imagine it would be a challenge to afford theatre for six! Glad you could make such good use of theatre in London!! 💚💚💚

  2. There is nothing quite like live theater, although I haven’t been to one in years. I love the painting. I’ll bet those ducks are chatting up a storm! I love the new painting-in-process. The open book is what draws me to it.

    1. I haven’t been to live theater since before the pandemic. A friend went to a Shakespeare festival recently and …well, theater has been on my mind. And yes, I’ll bet my ducks were quite chatty 🤣🤣
I’m glad you like the painting in progress and I hope you’ll like it when I’m finished too! 🤞🤞
