The time of year has begun that my studio resembles Santa’s workshop. So there will be times when I write more cryptically here than I normally write. I’ll be leaving out whole swaths of what I’m very busily working on because … gifts.
Imagine one of Santa’s elves on a business trip, South of the North Pole, sourcing materials for Santa’s workshop. If that elf was asked about what workshop projects were in progress the elf would shrug “oh, the usual, you know” and desperately change the topic of conversation.
Look! Trees!
Here are some of the trees I can see from my windows and yard.

I picked 6 of the trees I can easily see from my house and have been regularly painting portraits of them. Perhaps you’ve seen some of them on my email newsletter.

… oh look! Books about trees!!

And here’s a poem by D. H. Lawrence about trees…

I had difficulty getting into it but became very involved with the stories. It is a good book to remind us little humans that there is a lot of other forms of life on our planet and they need to be given room to live.

Trees are a very fruitful subject for artistic study and creative contemplation. I have never had much aptitude for – and therefore interest in – drawing them myself but I always enjoy seeing other artist’s portraits of trees.

If you’d told me some years ago that I’d create a series on trees I’d have said “you’re kidding me”. The creative life has so many unexpected twists and turns…
